Feb 8 Day 13 First Road Trip

At 9am we were off in the new Jeep for a road trip to Orangewalk town. One of the local residents, Jill, rode along with us today. She is from Tennessee, but now lives full time in Orchard Bay. It was great to have our own personal tour guide. From here we headed along the rough sand packed roads full of potholes and speed bumps. High speed of about 30kms/hr. Needless to say it takes along time to get anywhere. First stop at a lady’s house/ restaurant for breakfast in a small village if Chunox, but she was closed already. Now on to Orangewalk. Passed by many fields of sugar cane and corn. (Different variety of corn than back home). Through a Mennonite community named Little Belize where they still use horse and buggy for transportation. So few cars on the “highways”. Thanks to Mike we have an offline version of Google maps of Belize so we know where to go. There are next to NO road signs or direction signs. Once in Orangewalk we looked around in some shops and went to a beautiful NEW restaurant along a river. I had lobster linguine and Garnet tried the Belizian chicken and beans. Brenda had good ole chicken fingers and fries. Food was delicious. After a couple beers we were back in the car for a bit of grocery shopping before our trip back. Picked up some fresh bananas and pineapple.  On our way back stopped at a lake for the view and rest. Then onward to Orchid Bay. Visited with Jill at the casita then decided to go over to Blackbeards pub across the bay for taco night. On the way, we noticed the barricade missing from the new bridge, so…. OVER the new bridge we go. We get to the other side and Garnet has to move a barrel and pylon so we can get off the bridge.  It’s quite the improvement for the area from the little crank ferry. The new bridge should be fully open in the next month. They have been using the little crank ferries in the area for more than 25years. Had tacos and watched the sun set from across the bay then ventured back to Orchid Bay. In the casita now having a drink and relaxing.
